Real Madrid defender Pepe believes his reputation amongst match officials has contributed to his poor disciplinary record.
The 29-year-old has picked up three yellow cards in La Liga already this season, and is regularly taunted by opposition fans for his seemingly rough approach.
"When I do a regular foul, it's like I have half-killed them," he explained, speaking to reporters.
"I get a raw deal from referees."
The Portugal international went on to defend his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Champions League clash with Machester City on Wednesday.
"The press is to blame for a lot of the criticism that Cristiano receives, as you are always depicting him as the villain.
"For many people Cristiano is the best player in the world. He is fine, happy, and ready to help the team.
"I think what City have got is team spirit. It will be a battle and we have to match their spirit," he enthused.
