thumbnail Hello,

The 66-year-old explains that he was on the wish list of DFB president Egidius Braun while he was in charge at Blackburn

England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed he almost took the Germany job in 1998, despite the misgivings of Franz Beckenbauer.

The Three Lions take on their historic rivals at Wembley on Tuesday evening as both sides look to finalise their preparations for next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

However, Hodgson admits his career could have taken a very different turn following a phonecall from German Football Association (DFB) president Egidius Braun when he was in charge of Blackburn Rovers.

"He had difficulties with signing a foreign coach [for the Germany team]," the 66-year-old coach told Bild.

"My friend Franz Beckenbauer made clear that a foreign national coach would help neither the German coaching program nor the young and talented German coaches.

"It was an honour when Braun called, but I had a contract with Blackburn. So I just remained a name on the president's wish list."
