Goal Australia's betting expert Paul Gough points you in the direction of the smart money as Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City host Newcastle United on Tuesday morning (AEST)
New Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini looks certain to start his EPL managerial career with a win on Monday night but if the bookies are right then much greater prizes could follow later in the season.
The Citizens complete the first round of the new EPL season with a home clash against a modest Newcastle on Tuesday morning (Australian time) and are at short odds to win against a side that finished a disappointing 16th last year.
However, despite reigning EPL champions Manchester United and Europa League holders Chelsea having already strolled to comfortable opening round wins, City remain the early title favourites.
City head into their opening match as the $3.20 title favourites at Betfair, just ahead of Chelsea at $3.25 and United at $3.80, with Arsenal drifting from $9 to $20 after their shock opening day loss at home to Aston Villa.
This is despite the fact that City - who sensationally won the 2011-12 title on the last kick of the season at the expense of United - finished a distant 11 points behind United in second place last season.
However, new City manager Pellegrini - who worked wonders on a shoestring budget at Spanish club Malaga - is being tipped to bring back the title for big-spending City, who have recruited heavily in the off-season.
City are the dominant $1.28 favourites at Centrebet and $1.33 at Sportsbet.com.au to beat Newcastle, who are being given little chance at $11 and $10 respectively while even the draw is priced at as much as $5 at Sportsbet.com.au and $5.25 at Centrebet.
Back City to keep a clean sheet against Newcastle at $2.02 at Betfair.
Back Yaya Toure to score the first goal at odds of $7.50 at Eskander's Betstar.
And it's little wonder Newcastle are such big odds.
Not only have the Geordies barely strengthened a squad that only just avoided relegation last season - while City have bought in the likes of Sevilla pair Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas as well as highly regarded Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic - but they have also failed to beat City in their past 13 meetings.
City have won 11 and drawn two of those matches and last year scored a thumping 4-0 win in this fixture.
You can get as much as $11 at Centrebet and $14 at Sportsbet.com.au on City to repeat that 4-0 win from last season on Monday night in correct-score betting but we would prefer to be a bit more conservative and go for City to win 2-0 at odds of $6.50 at Sportsbet.com.au.
City kept 13 clean sheets in their 19 home matches in the EPL last season and the home side to keep a clean sheet looks excellent value at just better than even money odds of $2.02 at Betfair.
As for first goalscorer markets, City players are dominating the betting with Sergio Aguero and new signing Negredo the equal $4.50 favourites at Eskander's Betstar to score the game's opening goal.
However the value may well be star midfielder Yaya Toure at $7.50 considering he has scored in each of his last three matches against Newcastle.
