The uncapped Everton midfielder has been included in the Three Lions squad for the first time ahead of Wednesday's friendly clash with Sweden in Stockholm.
But, despite hailing the Wigan-born playmaker's qualities, Hodgson has admitted that he faces a tough task in trying to leapfrog several established stars in the middle of the park.

“Leon’s been a player I’ve admired since I came back to Fulham five years ago,” Hodgson told reporters.
“He’s a player who has always done extremely well whenever I’ve watched Everton.
“Leon is a really good player but he faces stiff competition in the part of the field where he plays.
“On this occasion we’ve an opportunity to bring Leon in. We’ll be grateful to meet him and work with him for a couple of days to see how he fits in to what we’re trying to do at international level.”
Osman's club manager David Moyes has also praised the Toffees midfielder, describing his call-up as deserved reward for consistency.
Moyes said: "That news went down with the players and staff as good as anyone that has gone before.
"It was a pleasure to tell everyone that Ossie [Osman] had been called up for England. His form this season has been such that he really deserves this.
"His consistency during my time here has been exceptional. He will take the ball and he will want to help England play.
"His football intelligence is as good as anyone I have ever worked with. He understands what you want him to do and he always gets on with it to the best of his ability.
"I felt at times that he might miss out but his form and Everton's form this season have helped him."
