THE WEEKEND STORY

Dandenong Thunder took out their second minor premiership in four seasons after a scoreless draw with Oakleigh in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. Friday's games saw goals galore, including Bentleigh convincing 3-0 winners over Heidelberg to make it seven games undefeated for the Greens. Hume and Richmond meanwhile, played out an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Nick Hegarty and Tom Cahill bagging a brace each. Moreland were twice behind before Carl Recchia’s second strike salvaged a point at home to Southern Stars.  South Melbourne did their finals chances no harm, defeating fifth-placed Northcote 1-0.  In the other Sunday game, Melbourne Knights and Green Gully shared the points at Somers Street.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEKEND

Dandenong Thunder

Looking at performances over the weekend, the Thunder were probably not the side to choose, but all the plaudits must go to them after securing the minor premiership. In a blistering start to the season, where they only conceded three goals in the first ten games, Dandenong set the pace from the onset and sealed their dominance over the league on the weekend, winning the minor premiership with two games to spare. Aside from a patch of mid-season stagnation, Chris Taylor's side never really looked threatened at top spot, but ultimately it will all mean nothing if they do not take out the VPL title.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Dandenong may have sewn up first spot and given themselves the first week off come post-season, but the rest of the finals picture is far from finished. Bentleigh, who under John Anastasiadis have probably been the most underrated side in the competition this season, still have a chance at finishing second and securing a home final. They may very well accomplish that feat on the last day against Oakleigh. Northcote, after their loss to South Melbourne, look far from assured for a playoff spot, with their final two matches against Oakleigh and Green Gully no easy tasks. Out of all the teams, Hume on paper have the easiest end to the season, coming up against the Stars and Moreland, and could cause headaches if they clinch fifth spot.

THE NUMBERS

7 - The number of games it has taken Richmond's Tom Cahill to score nine goals, since his mid-season switch from Sunshine George Cross.

2.7 - The average number of goals in each match in Round 20, despite two clean sheets.

1 - The number of times Oakleigh have beaten Dandenong out the past eight meetings.
