THE WEEKEND STORY

Bonnyrigg White Eagles were crowned NSWPL premiers after a gritty 1-0 win over lowly Parramatta FC. Adrian Ucchino netted the only goal of the game - and his first of the season - with a delightful back-heel flick on 78 minutes. Marconi Stallions all but secured their top-five spot as Joey Gibbs struck a brace to give them a 2-0 win at home to Manly United. Reigning champions Sydney Olympic remain second despite a 3-2 loss against the Sutherland Sharks. Travis Major and India-bound Sean Rooney both netted braces as Blacktown City thrashed South Coast Wolves 4-0. Rockdale City Suns saw their finals chances hit hard after a 1-0 loss at Blacktown Spartans, while APIA Leichhardt crushed Sydney United 58 4-2.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEKEND

Blacktown City

City took a step towards sealing a finals spot with a 4-0 thrashing of the third-placed South Coast Wolves. Former Jet Rooney - reportedly on his way to Indian Premier League club Salgaocar - was brought down in the area for Major to convert from the spot in the fifth minute. Rooney's long-range drive doubled their lead before the striker headed in a wonderful cross from Daniel Bragg. Major also completed his brace to help City five points clear of the sixth-placed Rockdale City Suns.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Bonnyrigg collected the NSWPL premiership with two games to spare, moving 10 points clear of Sydney Olympic. They did it in style too, largely thanks to Ucchino's delightful flick. The result puts the White Eagles in a tremendous position heading into the finals series, although coach Brian Brown should avoid flirting with his team's form.

THE NUMBERS

3 - the number of games the third-placed South Coast Wolves have lost in succession

7 - the number of games the Spartans had gone winless before their win over the Rockdale City Suns

WEET OF THE WEEK
