STATE PICKS

Western Australia's state league returned to action this weekend after the cup break, with league-leaders Floreat Athena making light work of Football West's NTC side in a 7-0 thrashing, while Bayswater moved to second spot through their 1-0 win over Sterling Lions, following Inglewood's home loss to Perth.

In Queensland's State League, Brisbane Strikers restored their +10 lead with a 5-1 thumping of Gold Coast after Sunshine Coast's loss, as top goal-scorer and Brisbane Roar National Youth League graduate Matthew Thurtell bagged a hat trick. In the Brisbane Premier League, Eastern Suburbs opened the door for Brisbane City to take the last finals spot after their loss, while things remain as they were at the top for Wolves FC.

While the top two continued on their winning path in South Australia, Western Strikers' ensuing loss rekindled Adelaide Raiders' chances of making the post-season, with the sides only separated by goal difference with two rounds remaining. Campbelltown City sits two points behind.

The race for the finals is also heating up in the capital, with Canberra FC's shock loss to Canberra City giving Woden Valley hope, after their draw with leaders Belconnen.

In Northern NSW, Newcastle Olympic reclaimed top spot during the week over Newcastle Jets' youth side, while both sides notched up wins on the weekend.

In Tasmania, Eagles travel to South Hobart on Sunday needing a win to go level on points and take the title down to the wire after both recorded victories in the Southern League, while the top three still chasing the title in the Northern League all had home wins.
