THE WEEKEND STORY

In the race for the finals, Hume City stayed in the hunt in their 3-1 triumph, while South Melbourne snatched the three points in injury time at Kingston Heath, defeating Southern Stars 3-2. On Sunday, Green Gully claimed their third win out of four since the opening of transfer window, continuing their traditional late-season charge with a 2-1 win away to Moreland.  Finally, Bentleigh Greens trounced a depleted ten-man Melbourne Knights side 4-0 at Somers St.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEKEND

South Melbourne

After a match their fans would do well to forget against Richmond and with growing calls for coach Peter Tsolakis' dismissal, South pulled one out of the bag in what was a sterling comeback. Down at half-time and with a host of senior players out due to injury and suspension, 17-year old Nick Jacobs stepped up to play the role of hero, scoring a 94th-minute winner to possibly keep his coach safe for another week.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Form fluctuates with remarkable ease in the Victorian Premier League, as notably evidenced with the Melbourne Knights and Southern Stars.  But one thing remains constant: Green Gully hitting their straps late. The reigning champions had an indifferent start to the season, but the Cavaliers made it their third win in four post-transfer window, sending an ominous warning to those contending for the title, including the Thunder. Dandenong coach Chris Taylor, spotted at clash between Springvale and North Geelong, knows they are coming.
