Russia coach Dick Advocaat will have to make do without the services of defender Vasili Berezutski at Euro 2012 as the CSKA Moscow defender has been ruled out of contention due to injury.

The 29-year-old recently sustained a thigh injury, and was initially expected to be match fit in time well ahead of this summer's tournament.

However, Berezutski has endured a recovery setback, and has consequently decided to withdraw from the squad.

"It's a pity, but the situation is much worse than we thought. I tried to run and immediately felt pain and discomfort," Berezutski was quoted as saying on the official Uefa website.

"In the best-case scenario I would return to full fitness by the start of the tournament. We talked with Advocaat and agreed that I can't help the team.

"I would only be taking up someone's place at the training camp."

Russia start Euro 2012 against Czech Republic on June 8.
