The Brazil international fractured his right clavicle during training on Wednesday and will undergo surgery later in the day.
The Blaugrana announced that the 29-year-old will be fully fit in six to eight weeks.
Alves, who was sent off in Saturday's Liga clash with Real Betis, has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou.
However, outgoing coach Pep Guardiola described Alves as irreplaceable after the game in Seville, while Barca midfielder Javier Mascherano hailed his fellow South American as the best right-back in the world on Wednesday.
Alves, though, will not be available for the Catalan club'' Copa del Rey showdown with Athletic Bilbao at the Vicente Calderon on May 25.
