AFC force Vietnamese club to change name

Conflict with the AFC's main sponsor causes the Vietnamese Cup holders to revert to their original name
Reigning Vietnamese Cup winners Sai Gon Xuan Thanh have been asked by the Asian Football Confederation to change their name for the coming season.

Xuan Thanh qualified for the 2013 AFC Cup, where they are in Group H alongside Tampines Rovers of Singapore, East Bengal of India and Selangor FA of Malaysian Super League.

In December 2012, the club had a change of name to Xi Mang Xuan Thanh Sai Gon, after their main sponsor became a cement company [Xi Mang means cement in Vietnamese].

However, after a meeting on January 15, AFC asked that the club remove the Xi Mang prefix, as the main sponsor for the AFC Cup also happens to be a cement company.
Faced with the prospect of sitting out the AFC Cup, Xuan Thanh had little choice but to revert to their original name of Sai Gon Xuan Thanh.

This will be the club's fifth name change.
