Mark BIRIGHITTI
Newcastle Jets
|
Birighitti was on hand to save the day for the Jets in the F3 derby, blocking a Michael McGlinchey effort after a winding run. It was tough to pick the goalkeeper for this week's team, and Danny Vukovic was unlucky to miss out. But Birighitti's clean sheet was enough to get him the nod. |
| DEFENDERS |
Diogo FERREIRA Melbourne Victory |
Simon COLOSIMO Melbourne Heart |
Nik TOPOR-STANLEY Western Sydney |
Sam GALLAWAY Newcastle Jets |
||
|
Gallaway gets his first nod of the season at left-back after a standout performance in the scoreless derby against Central Coast. His efforts to keep quiet a potent Graham Arnold attack were enough to accompany team-mate Birighitti in this week's team. In the middle of defence is the reliable Topor-Stanley - fast becoming a regular in this team - and Colosimo, who led the Heart to only their third clean sheet of the season. Colosimo was instrumental in keeping Adelaide United out despite John Kosmina's men having 54 per cent of possession and over 100 more passes. Ferreira is the sole representative from an uninspiring match against Perth, but his vision and passing for Victory throughout were worth watching. |

| MIDFIELDERS |
Patrick GERHARDT Melbourne Heart |
Thomas BROICH Brisbane Roar |
Jason CULINA Sydney FC |
||
|
Broich has been below par at stages of Brisbane's campaign this season, but he was anything but in the 2-1 loss to Western Sydney on Sunday. The German was back to his best as Brisbane tried to break through a dour Wanderers defence, and had a shot go just over the crossbar as he tried to break the deadlock. Culina was almost the forgotten man of the A-League, but with Brett Emerton in fine form once again and Del Piero scoring for fun on Saturday, Sydney FC's older brigade could be the key behind a run to the finals. On the right is Gerhardt, who was solid once again for Heart. While he was in defence in the win over Adelaide United on Friday, his ability to stifle his opponents' passing through midfield means he wins a place further afield. |

| FORWARDS |
Richard GARCIA Melbourne Heart |
Alessandro DEL PIERO Sydney FC |
Joel GRIFFITHS Sydney FC |
||||
|
In a team which scored seven times on Saturday it is impossible to leave out two of the men who got on the scoresheet. Del Piero's four goals and single assist was one of the great all-time A-League performances [winning him Goal.com's World Player of the Week], and his class and poise were a delight to watch. Griffiths made his debut for the Sky Blues against Wellington, and it already looks like a good investment for Sydney FC. Griffiths scored ten minutes into to his return to the A-League from China and provided a dangerous partnership with the Italian. Del Piero gets the central strikers role this week, while Griffiths and Garcia flank him after the latter's strike sealed a 2-0 win for Melbourne Heart and polished off his own industrious performance.
