| GOALKEEPER |
Ante COVIC
Western Sydney
|
With three great saves before half-time, Covic could be credited with the win just as much as either of Western Sydney's goalscorers. The most spectacular of the three came just in time to block a stinging Vince Lia effort and was enough for the veteran to take his place in this week's team. |
| DEFENDERS |
Craig GOODWIN Newcastle Jets |
Patrick ZWAANSWIJK Central Coast |
Nik TOPOR-STANLEY Western Sydney |
Adama TRAORE Melbourne Victory |
||
|
Traore was once again an attacking influence from defence, and his pass to find Flores looked like it may have been the winning move until a Daniel McBreen equaliser for the Mariners. He is able to get to the by-line and would fit in nicely alongside more dour defenders Topor-Stanley and Zwaanswijk. Topor-Stanley managed to head home a vital goal for the Wanderers while they kept a clean sheet, and Zwaanswijk - back after injury - was similarly pivotal. He was up against one of the best attacks in the league and to hold Rojas, Thompson and Flores to a draw was a great effort by the big Dutchman and his team-mates. Goodwin may be a left-footer but he versatile enough to play on either side of the field so he finds himself at right-back this week. His ball control and pace had Brisbane worried, and he forced a fine save from Michael Theo to prove he can go forward. |

| MIDFIELDERS |
Ruben ZADKOVICH Newcastle Jets |
Mark MILLIGAN Melbourne Victory |
Iain RAMSAY Adelaide United |
||
|
Zadkovich did his best Energizer Bunny impression in the 1-0 win over Brisbane, constantly putting pressure on the Roar midfield. It was his presence of mind which set up the only goal of the game. He capitalised on a Roar mistake to put through James Brown, who coolly set up Griffiths for the winner. In the middle of this week's team is Milligan; Victory's Mr Fix-it. He still has a big defensive presence and, while he missed a golden opportunity to score early in the first-half and another volley went wide later in the game, he has shown a more attacking side to his game since Gui Finkler went down injured. Ramsay provides the pace of this midfield trio and was also the only one of the three to score. His half-volley finish capped off a good game for the winger, who showed he is also dangerous from the set-piece. |

| FORWARDS |
Jeronimo NEUMANN Adelaide United |
Alessandro DEL PIERO Sydney FC |
Ryan GRIFFITHS Newcastle Jets |
||||
|
Jeronimo may have started on the bench but was the perfect early substitute for the injured Bruce Djite. While his first goal was a simple tap in from a defensive error, his second was a smart finish around Perth goalkeeper Danny Vukovic. On the other flank is Newcastle's Griffiths, who scored his sixth and most important goal of the season in the 1-0 triumph over Brisbane. Along with his goal, Griffiths was always keen to put pressure on the Roar's defence when they tried to play the ball out and created several other chances. In the central role this week is Sydney FC's marquee man Del Piero, who was instrumental in lifting his side from the bottom of the ladder. After a frustrating first half, he visibly lifted and his cross to find Rhyan Grant was an example of the class needed to drag the Sky Blues into finals contention. What do you think?
