European football's curtain-raising event - the Uefa Super Cup- takes place in Monaco on Friday [Saturday morning Australian time].

The Super Cup pits last season's Champions League winner Chelsea against the Europa League holders Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea will be looking to add to last season's FA Cup and Champions League trophies and give younger players like Jack Rodwell and Victor Moses some exposure to European football, while Atletico will use the game as a dress rehearsal for the Champions league group stages that begin on September 18.

In English Premier League fixtures this weekend, Manchester City host Queens Park Rangers [Sunday morning Australian time] in a repeat of last season's thrilling conclusion to last season.

Manchester City will be looking to put a flat performance away to Liverpool last Monday behind them, while Mark Hughes will be expecting an instant impact from Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who signed from Serie A club Inter Milan.

Liverpool host a misfiring Arsenal in the pick of the Premier League fixtures on Sunday (Sunday night Australian time).

Arsene Wenger will want greater penetration from his new-look strike force of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud, and Gervinho, while Brendon Rodgers will hope his side can eradicate lapses in concentration to secure all three points.

Elsewhere, Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich host a Stuttgart team [Monday morning Australian time] eager to impress head coach Bruno Labbadia after an agonising home loss to Wolfsburg last Saturday.

Bayern get the chance to introduce new €40 million midfield signing Javi Martinez to the Bavarian faithful after resolving legal and tax issues.
