Australian defender Dylan McGowan says he is determined to show his value at Hearts after landing a one-year extension at the club.

McGowan's future at the Scottish Premier League club was in doubt in the wake of the Jambos' recent financial troubles, but - along with fellow youngster Callum Tapping - has secured the chance to continue his development in Edinburgh with a 12-month extension.

"I'll be here next year, which is great. It wasn't a case of me signing, as such. It's a contract which rolls on. The uncertainty plays on your mind a little but I'm over the moon to be staying here," Adelaide-born McGowan told The Scotsman.

"Hopefully, I can have a better season next year and prove that I should be here a little bit longer again. I'm looking forward to pushing on, getting some more games and proving my worth at this football club."

The 21-year-old defender has impressed in Scotland, making his 18th appearance for Hearts this season in their 3-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday.

The Australia youth representative has been at the club since 2010, spending time on-loan at Scottish Second Division outfit East Fife and now-defunct A-League club Gold Coast United.

His older brother, Ryan, moved to Chinese outfit Shandong Luneng in January to help ease Heart's budget.
