After suffering a serious knee injury for club side FC Utrecht, Australian international Adam Sarota could spend up to 10 months on the sidelines

Australia international midfielder Adam Sarota will miss the next eight to 10 months after suffering a serious knee injury with Eredivisie club FC Utrecht on Saturday.

Sarota, 24, was injured in Utrecht's 3-1 win over Willem II on Saturday, with scans later revealing the extent of the damage.

"When the surgery will take place, is not yet known," Utrecht club doctor Niels Wijne said.

"The knee must be calm. The next few days should show how quickly this happens."

Having moved from Brisbane Roar alongside Tommy Oar and Michael Zullo before the 2010-11 Eredivisie season, Sarota had been having his best campaign for Utrecht and had made 18 league starts.

He had been a regular in Socceroos squads since his debut in October 2011 against Malaysia, but will have to wait some time now to add to his three caps.

"I went to a duel with an opponent… It was not even a tough challenge. Initially, I felt a sharp pain, but I thought after quick treatment that I could play again," he told Sport-Promotion.

"Unfortunately, I had to be replaced anyway. The club doctor told me a little later that it did not look good and that I had to have a scan… A scan does not lie. I will spend the rest of the season out."
