Bosnich wants Schwarzer in the A-League

Mark Schwarzer's expected departure from Fulham has been confirmed, prompting Mark Bosnich to nominate the A-League as a potential destination for the veteran Socceroo

Fulham have confirmed Mark Schwarzer has left the club, with Mark Bosnich calling for the Socceroos goalkeeper to consider a move to the A-League.

Australia international Schwarzer had been offered a short contract extension at Fulham, but was told not to expect a first-team role following the arrival of Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg, 30, signed from Roma in June and the Netherlands goalkeeper is expected to become the first-choice number one next season.

Schwarzer made 219 appearances during five seasons at Craven Cottage, having joined from Middlesbrough on a free transfer in 2008.

The 40-year-old had said he would not decide his future until after Australia's crucial FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifier against Iraq in June, which the Socceroos won to reach their third successive finals.

Hull City, promoted from the Championship last season, are among the clubs reportedly interested in taking him on.

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Bosnich believes if Schwarzer cannot secure a contract with a Premier League club, he should consider returning to Australia.

"He needs to be number one, Fulham haven't guaranteed number one football," Bosnich told 1116 SEN.

"He can't afford that coming up to a World Cup year. Hopefully he'll be able to stay in the Premier League, if not, then he could do a lot worse then come back here for a year.

"The season in the A-League won't finish up until May, the World Cup is, I think, in late June early July, so there won't be too much of a break."

Schwarzer was joined in leaving Fulham by defender Chris Baird, Greek midfielder Giorgos Karagounis and former Wales international Simon Davies.

Development squad players Alex Smith, James Musa, Richard Peniket, Tom Donegan and Corey Gameiro have also been shown the door.

Australian Gameiro has already signed for Sydney FC, while Melbourne Victory have been linked with Karagounis.
