Newcastle Jets striker Emile Heskey has announced that he will play for the club again next season at a club function on Tuesday.

The former England and Liverpool star scored nine goals in 23 A-League appearances for the Jets in what has been a successful acquisition for coach Gary Van Egmond.

Speaking at the Newcastle Jets awards night, Heskey said: "Everything is agreed - I will be coming back next season."

"It has been great. I had spoken to many players and none of them had a bad word to say about the A-League and I knew I had to experience it myself and I am glad I have. It has been massive year.

"There has been lots of interest in the game from around the world and I know people back in England people watching it despite the time difference."

Heskey was equal top goal-scorer of the Jets this season with nine goals and hopes he can better that mark next year and lead the team to a more successful season.

"I wish I could have got a few more and got into double figures but hopefully I can a bit more next year," he said.

"It has been brilliant. The lads have worked really hard this season and lots of them it is their first full season. So we just have to work on being consistent."

The news was also confirmed by Newcastle chief executive Troy Palmer via the club's Twitter account.

Heskey was nominated for the Jets' player of the year award along with captain Ruben Zadkovich and goalkeeper Mark Birighitti, who took out the accolade.

Birighitti found himself behind Eugene Galekovic at former club Adelaide last season but enjoyed a consistent first season in the Hunter Valley.

"I feel very privileged and honoured to win this award," Birighitti said

"Thank you to Gary [Van Egmond] and the coaches for believing in me."
