Ange Postecoglou has been named as coach of the A-League All Stars, having edged Tony Popovic to lead the side against Manchester United in Sydney in July.

The Melbourne Victory coach gained 36.8 percent of fan's votes, ahead of Wanderers counterpart Popovic 36.2 percent and Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold with 15.4 percent.

Also announced on Monday was the opening of voting for the playing squad to take on visiting United on July 20.

Voting will end on April 30, with the final squad to be decided by a weighted system.  Fan voting will account for 50 percent, with 20 percent decided by an expert panel and 20 percent via Professional Footballers Australia's Player of the Year.

Two-time A-League title-winning coach Postecoglou's decision will make up the final 10 percent.

"It's a concept that is sure to grow legs and become a mainstay in our football calendar. I think there will be massive interest in this game. After a couple of months without A-League football fans can start to get withdrawal symptoms, it’s a great way to cut short the wait for football fans," Postecoglou said via statement.

"After three seasons coaching in the A-League I think people know the type of football I want to play and I'm looking forward to putting together a team with the fans that can do that."
