Melbourne Heart have condemned the actions of a fan captured on television striking another patron during the club's match with Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

Footage showed the man in question approach a Wanderers supporter in the away section at AAMI Park and punching him.

Tensions between the home and travelling fans had come to a head in the second half, with Heart's Yarraside group swapping ends after the break to be closer to the vocal Wanderers support.

Heart released a statement on Monday, revealing Victoria Police had opened an investigation into the assault.

"Victoria Police has engaged with all stakeholders and an investigation has commenced. Police are confident that both the perpetrator and the victim will be located and spoken to," it read.

"Victoria Police will conduct an investigation as part of police procedure.

"Football Federation Australia, as a custodian for banning individuals who breach the FFA spectator code of behaviour, will follow up the incident to ensure the appropriate sanction is applied.

"Melbourne Heart FC continues to adopt a zero tolerance policy on anti-social behaviour and anyone who exhibits behaviour of this type will be removed from all association with Melbourne Heart FC."
