Sydney FC have announced the expected signing of Brazilian defender Tiago Calvano on a short-term deal.

The 31-year-old has inked a deal with the Sky Blues that will see him at the club until the end of the season, signing an injury replacement deal for the sidelined Pascal Bosschaart.

Bosschaart was ruled out of the remainder of the campaign with a serious heel injury.

Calvano has joined Frank Farina's side from the Newcastle Jets, with the Sky Blues' A-League rivals releasing him to push the move through.

"It's good to have Tiago on board," Farina said via statement. "We have had a few injuries at the back and we were getting a little thin so having him here gives us more options and depth in defence."

The experienced centre-back signed a two-year contract with Newcastle in May 2011 and has made 28 appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

"I'm very happy to be here at Sydney FC," Tiago said. "I look forward to start playing and helping my new club and team mates.

"I think this is a great opportunity for my career. Sydney FC is a good club and Sydney is a beautiful city. I hope I can prove to the club what I can do."

He will add cover to a defence that is already missing Adam Griffiths and Nathan Sherlock to injuries.

Calvano - having not played for Newcastle in over a month - will begin training with Sydney FC on Thursday and is likely to be part of his side's squad against the Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
