Football Federation Australia to probe brawl between Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix

Further action could be on its way for the protagonists in Saturday's brawl in the pre-season encounter, with the FFA to review footage of the match

The brawl that erupted during a pre-season friendly between the Newcastle Jets and the Wellington Phoenix on Saturday will be the focus of a review from Football Federation Australia.

With the match officially sanctioned by the FFA, it is subject to the same scrutiny as the A-League's regular-season games.

Those sent off in the match in Weston - Newcastle's Tiago and Phoenix trio Manny Muscat, Ben Sigmund and Andrew Durante - will automatically miss two pre-season matches after being shown straight red cards.

They could be among those facing longer bans should the FFA deem further action appropriate.

"We will get the referee's report and any footage we can get our hands on and then make determinations," an FFA spokesman told The Newcastle Herald on Sunday.

"It is an internal process between football operations, our legal team and the referees department. If the footage reveals any more [than the send-offs], we will act on that as we do in all matches."

The brawl began in the 25th minute of the 3-1 win to Newcastle when Muscat and Tiago clashed, with a melee developing as players on the pitch and from the bench became involved.

Muscat, Tiago and Sigmund were sent off as referee Tim McGilchrist finally restored order, with Durante sent off against his former club during the second half.
