The Young Socceroos' FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign is over after a 2-1 loss to hosts Turkey in Trabzon on Friday.
Paul Okon's side slumped to a second straight loss in Group C, finishing bottom despite at times playing attractive football.
For the third consecutive game, Australia went ahead as Jamie Maclaren scored his first goal of the tournament early in the second half.
But Turkey responded almost immediately through Hakan Calhanoglu and Okay Yokuslu gave the hosts a win with a clever chip three minutes before full-time.
It marks the third straight U-20 World Cup at which Australia have ended up winless, but the signs were largely encouraging in Turkey.
The Young Socceroos needed a win at the Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium and took a surprise lead seven minutes into the second half.
Ryan Williams' cross from the right was impressively side-footed high into the net in by Maclaren.
The lead only lasted two minutes as Turkey, only needing a draw to advance, hit back through Calhanoglu.
Calhanoglu was given time and space 20 yards from goal and he fired a powerful shot past Paul Izzo and in off the post.
Turkey's winner came three minutes before full-time thanks to a delightful goal from Yokuslu.
The effort again came from range, but Yokuslu's chip was perfectly weighted and caught Izzo off his line.
Turkey finished behind Colombia, who thrashed El Salvador 3-0, in the group, with the Young Socceroos bottom on one point.
