Rodgers identifies need for 'experienced' player ahead of possible Sneijder move

Rodgers identifies need for 'experienced' player ahead of possible Sneijder move

Latest Fellaini admits interest in Chelsea move as he 'wants to take next step' Previous

Liverpool's manager has revealed that he is looking to change the club's transfer policy, despite resistance from the hierarchy, away from developing youngsters with potential

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he is looking to shift the emphasis of Liverpool 's transfer policy away from nurturing young players with potential and towards recruiting those with greater experience.

As Goal.com exclusively revealed, the Merseyside club met with Wesley Sneijder's representatives on Monday when talks were described as "constructive", and hope to bring the Serie A star to the Premier League as he stalls on his response to Galatasary's offer.

Rodgers wants to broaden the parameters of the club's player recruitment, but hinted that the board are uncertain about deviating from their policy of developing young players over time.

“The owners have been brilliant for me. They have given me some money to spend and we have brought in young players with that,” Rodgers told reporters.

“There is no doubt that they want to look at young players, those who can develop over the next seven to 10 years. But I think it is healthy not to agree.

"I have got to where I have at such a young age by not saying yes all the time. I have always known what I have wanted. I don’t expect anything at this stage. I have got to earn my right. Sir Alex Ferguson has taken all that time to earn the rights he has now. It is going to take time. But I will certainly always say what I feel is right for the team. We will disagree and we have disagreed before.

“I repeat, the owners have been brilliant. I have got no complaints. If you ask any manager, they will always look for a young player that they can develop. But there are certain times when you need that experience.”

The transfer policy at Anfield as seen the club spend around £40 million on young talent, with 23-year-old Daniel Sturridge, 21-year-old Fabio Borini and 22-year-old Joe Allen all joining Liverpool since Rodgers' arrival in June.
