Gabriel Heinze is on the brink of returning to Newell's Old Boys after both they and his current club Roma confirmed on their official websites that the player had left the Serie A side.

The 34-year-old moved to Italy last summer, after spending two seasons at Olympique Marseille, and went on to appear 29 times in all competitions for the club, as they finished seventh in the league.

The Primera Division outfit released a statement on their website on Thursday detailing the defender's imminent move: "We have agreed contractual terms with the player, the only things missing are the appropriate signatures."

Roma then confirmed he had left the club on Friday, posting the following statement on their official site.

"AS Roma and Gabriel Ivan Heinze have mutually agreed on the early termination of the player's contract with the club, which was due to expire on 2013."

Heinze started his career at Newell's Old Boys, making eight appearances for the Rosario-based side in the 1996-97 season before joining Real Valladolid.

Heinze is the latest Roma player to cancel his contract this summer in favour of a move elsewhere, following in the steps of David Pizarro who recently joined Fiorentina, and centre-back Juan, who moved back to Brazil to join Internacional in July.
