Atletico Madrid are a distant third when it comes to paying players, as the Rojiblancos hand over between €65m and €67m on their squad

Barcelona and Real Madrid spend approximately €200 million on wages, according to data released by the Spanish Football League (LFP).

The governing body introduced a Financial Control law this season with the aim of ensuring that a club does not spend more on players than the difference between its expenditure and revenue.

However, while there has already been a 12 per cent drop in spending among the sides in the top two divisions since last season, from €750 million to €660m, Barcelona and Real Madrid were not included in the equation as their respective outlays "distort" the picture, according to LFP director general Javier Gomez.

Indeed, the stats revealed that the Clasico duo spend between €190m and €200m on wages, with Atletico Madrid a distant third in terms of spending, on €65m to €67m.

Gomez also explained that this summer's exodus of top Spanish players from La Liga is a necessary evil as far as the country's debt-ridden teams are concerned.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” Gomez is quoted as saying by AS. “It’s sad to see our best players leaving, but on the plus side, this is the only way we can keep going."

Spain internationals Jesus Navas, Roberto Soldado and Alvaro Negredo are among those to have departed La Liga for the Premier League this summer.
