The on-loan forward is free to re-join his team-mates in their pre-season preparations following a fitness scare prior to a friendly run-out last week

Newcastle Jets attacker Nathan Burns is expected to be fit for his side's A-League season opener against Sydney after being cleared of a serious hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old, who is on loan from Incheon United, withdrew from Newcastle's 1-0 friendly win over the Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Wednesday after feeling tightness in the muscle.

After losing star striker Emile Heskey for six weeks due to a knee injury suffered in the same game, the Jets received good news on Friday.

"Good news for @nathanburns10," the Jets tweeted.

"Scans showed no tears in his hamstring, meaning he should be fit to play against Sydney FC in Round 1."

The Jets will open the A-League season on October 11, when they travel to Allianz Stadium to take on the Sky Blues.
