Orlando Engelaar suffers suspected broken leg in Heart debut

The ex PSV Eindhoven and Schalke man may have to wait to make his A-League debut after picking up a potentially serious injury in his first run-out in Australia

Melbourne Heart appear to have suffered a major blow ahead of the new A-League campaign, with marquee signing Orlando Engelaar suffering a suspected broken leg in a pre-season friendly.

Dutchman Engelaar, who was only unveiled to the media last week, picked up the injury in a tackle with Brisbane Roar's Thomas Broich early in a friendly between the two teams in Lismore, New South Wales, on Sunday.

A hat-trick from Besart Berisha saw the Roar run out 3-0 winners, while Heart will await the result of scans to determine the extent of Engelaar's injury.

A former Netherlands international midfielder, the 34-year-old had been tipped to have a major impact on the competition by Heart coach John Aloisi.

In a small consolation for the club, another new signing in Harry Kewell completed his first 90 minutes in a red and white shirt.
