With Papiss Cisse's future in doubt after a row over the club's new shirt sponsor, the Magpies boss is adamant that his side must do everything possible to sign the Lyon striker

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has urged the club's hierarchy to push through a deal for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Magpies boss spoke out on Saturday as he tries to convince the higher-ups at St James' Park to splash the cash, with OL confirming on Wednesday that the club had communicated an interest in the France international.

"Gomis is a player who would suit us, and we should pursue it as strongly as we can," Pardew told The Daily Mirror.

The striker, who scored 16 goals in 37 games last season, has just one year left to run on his current contract with the French club and has previously stated his desire for a move.

The St James' Park outfit are the only Premier League side yet to make a senior signing this close-season, while a number of first-team players have left.

The likes of Danny Simpson and James Perch have both moved on, and Pardew is now urging the board and director of football Joe Kinnear to make the Frenchman's signature a priority, with Papiss Cisse at risk of departure after refusing to wear the logo of the team's new shirt sponsor, Wonga.
