The Spaniard's current deal has a €20m buyout clause and is set to expire in the summer of 2014, but Extebarria says he wants a decision to be made before the summer.
“I would like to close talks on a new contract or arrange to leave before June," he told reporters.
“I would like to stay. The club made their proposal, and we sent back another one. We have agreed to talk in February or March. The club has now had more time, and we have waited."
Benat also said he did not want his future to go the same way as Fernando Llorente's at Athletic Bilbao, which saw the striker sit out much of the season after contract talks broke down.
"It is not nice to be in a situation like that of [Fernando] Llorente," he added.
The 25-year old also admitted his form was being affected by the lack of clarity over his future.
“Physically I am fine. The legs respond, but what is not responding are the correct passes.
"The anxiety is taking its toll. I notice the murmurings of the crowd, but I try to stay focused.”
