The reigning Bundesliga champions sped into an early lead thanks to goals from Kuba and Marco Reus, but a Stefan Reinartz double made it 2-2.
Eventually it was striker Robert Lewandowski who decided the game in the 63rd minute and Klopp was left invigorated by an enthralling encounter.
"I think when you make it out to be a top match, and then you see what happened, it certainly lived up to the expectations," the 45-year-old told reporters.
"It was really exciting. Both sides forced mistakes over the 90 minutes and there were so many twists. We've got to say that not many teams are going to come here and win.
"We got back at them following their equaliser and we even had the chance to make it 4-2, which shows strong morale.
"We can definitely defend better than we did [against Leverkusen] - I am sure of that. We are lucky, but not undeserved winners."
Dortmund now sit in second place in the Bundesliga, but are still 12 points adrift of Bayern Munich.
