Goals from Alessandro Florenzi and Mattia Destro helped the Giallorossi to a comfortable two-goal lead, but Rodrigo Palacio pegged one back shortly before the break to keep his side's chances alive.
"I must congratulate Roma. They set up the victory in the first half, but the tie is still open, very open," he told Rai Sport.
"Overall I was pleased with Inter's performance. Roma began very well in the first half, but we did what we had to do in the second half.
"I went for [Fredy] Guarin just off a striker, Palacio, and those two were our main threat in the first half, while [Ricardo] Alvarez had two good chances in the second period."
The second leg takes place on April 17.
