The Gunners will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they host Olympiakos. Adam Bate thinks they might only just edge to victory over the Greek side
But the England international will not be involved in Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Olympiakos on Wednesday.
Arsenal’s early-season form has been good but that feel-good factor has dissipated a little – not least because of a number of set-pieces have been conceded that have undermined some good displays.
The Gunners did have a positive result in Montpellier in their first group game and have the chance to build on that here. Arsenal are 1/3 (1.33) with Sportingbet to win this one.
Olympiakos need a result after suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Schalke in their first fixture.
But their form has been impressive as they currently sit top of the Greek table having won all five of their domestic league matches so far this season.
Olympiakos are 8/1 (9.00) with Sportingbet to cause an upset and beat Arsene Wenger’s side. The draw is available at 15/4 (4.75).
In the goalscorer markets, Lukas Podolski is the clear favourite to open the scoring. He’s at 16/5 (4.20) with Sportingbet, while Rafik Djebbour is the best bet for the visitors at 19/2 (10.50).
But the value here is elsewhere with Sportingbet seemingly convinced the Greek side will be unable to make a decent fight of this.
An early goal for the away side could set up an Olympiakos/draw scenario in the HT/FT betting but that’s out at 22/1 (23.00).
Even if Olympiakos cannot be expected to score, the price for a goalless draw is also available at an industry-best 16/1 (17.00) with Sportingbet.
That’s the value option in this one given that the Greeks will try to keep things tight and other bookmakers have the 0-0 at closer to 8s than 16s.
Even if Arsenal do find a breakthrough, it is unlikely to see Olympiakos go gung-ho so the pick of the bets is to take the good price of 15/4 (4.75) with Sportingbet for there to be under 1.5 goals here.
