The Netherlands international was previously linked with a move to Ajax, but Feyenoord now appear to be in pole position to sign the centre-back after holding talks with Malaga on Monday evening.
"It's an ongoing story. It all depends on the terms of the transfer. It's a matter of money. But I have a good feeling about it," Koeman stated to De Telegraaf.
"I think that Mathijsen will have a positive influence on the development of players such as Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij. That's the next step this team has to make."
Mathijsen has an ongoing contract with Malaga, but the Liga side are keen to offload the defender following their precarious financial situation.
