After a whirlwind opening to the men's Olympic football on Thursday, a number of players showcased their talents on the world stage.
Team GB were held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal after Craig Bellamy's first-half effort was cancelled out by a smart finish from Moussa Konate eight minutes from time.
Spain suffered a surprise defeat in their opening match as Yuki Otsu's first-half strike secured three points for Japan. Spain were also reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Inigo Martinez before half-time and required Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to make a number of smart saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
Brazil overcame a scare to run out 3-2 winners over Egypt in their opening Group A tie. Rafael, Leandro Damiao and Neymar sent Mano Menezes' side racing into a first-half lead before the Egyptians rallied back after the break with goals from Mohamed Aboutreika and Mohamed Salah.
Uruguay were also in danger of suffering a shock defeat in their opening clash as an impressive UAE side took the lead in the first half through Ismail Matar. Uruguay equalised before half-time following a stunning free-kick from Gaston Ramirez before Nicolas Lodeiro netted the winner in the 56th minute.
Elsewhere, Belarus secured a 1-0 victory over New Zealand through Dmitry Baga's strike, while Honduras and Morocco played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Switzerland were also held to a 1-1 tie by Gabon, while the match between Mexico and South Korea ended goalless.
