Pearce lauds 'special' Olympic atmosphere

Latest 'I miss the Premier League' - Barton keen on return to England folllowing Marseille loan Previous

The 50-year-old Team GB coach is raring to go ahead of this summer's football tournament and believes that the positive atmosphere around the country can help lift the players

Team GB coach Stuart Pearce has described the prospect of competing in this summer's Olympic Games as "something special".

Pearce has been keen to emphasise that the Team GB players are representing more than just their individual home countries at the tournament and believes there is a real sense of hope about what they can achieve together.

"When I've spoken to the players individually and said, 'How are you feeling about it?' they say they find it different to when they're with the England squad," Pearce told reporters.

"There's just something special about it that probably we can't put into words. There's something of a magnitude which is just incredible that we're involved in.

"The advice to all the players is, 'Look, we're in it, let's give it our best and try and win the tournament.

"That's what we'll prepare to do, but you must enjoy it, too. Couple those things together... I haven't got the right vocabulary, but there's something just slightly special about this one.

"Even different to the England squads I've been in, the Under-21s, whatever."

With England having exited Euro 2012 to Italy at the quarter-final stage on penalties, Pearce was determined not to let his team suffer the same fate this summer.

The former Nottingham Forest left-back tasted both victory and defeat from the spot during his own England career.

"We take it very seriously because once again England have gone out of a major championship on penalties," he continued.

"I've got the experience of that on both sides and that's why my focus is even more acute."
