The former Senegal and UAE national team boss is reportedly "90 per cent certain" for the Dubai club's vacant position, following the decision to sack the Argentine legend

Al Wasl vice-chairman Mohammed Bin Dukhan has confirmed former Senegal coach Bruno Metsu is one of "four to five potential candidates" for the club's vacant coaching job following Diego Maradona's sacking, while reports claim he is 90 per cent certain to get the job.

The Argentine legend was axed on Tuesday after a trophyless 2011-12 season; Maradona's first of a two-year deal with the Dubai club.

Bin Dukhan told reporters that an announcement on a new coach was expected in the coming weeks and confirmed Metsu, who is famous for guiding Senegal to a shock win over France at the 2002 World Cup, is in the mix.

“Bruno Metsu is one of the names available on the table for Al Wasl and next week we hope the decision will be made regarding the new coach. There are four-to-five coaches available for us,” he said.

However, Gulf News has reported a club official told them Metsu is "90 per cent certain" for the job and added no one else was in the frame.

Bin Dukhan clarified the club had no contact with high-profile duo Harry Redknapp and Sven-Goran Eriksson.

“There has been nothing regarding those coaches. “We don’t have any contact with them, particularly those names. For the future we are looking forward to a good technical coach to get Wasl back on track,” he said.

“About a new coach right now all I can say is there are a lot of names on the table and we will discuss to see who is best for us. All these are being comprehensively studied and all this will be sorted out by next week we hope.”

Former UAE national team boss Metsu recently missed out on the Persepolis job after being dismissed by Qatari club Al Gharafa in March.
