The Reading promotion push hit a bump when they were well beaten 3-1 by Peterborough on Tuesday but Brian McDermott’s side should get back to winning ways against fellow contenders Blackpool. The Royals have a great record at home winning their last five games and Blackpool have lost three of their last four away games.

Southampton have won seven of their last nine and are now in pole position to be a Premier League side in August. Nigel Adkins has done a superb job with the Saints and they host struggling Doncaster next. Rovers suffered back-to-back losses in their last two games and should be no match for the side at the top of the table.

Although they didn’t win their last game, Middlesbrough’s performance against West Ham showed they still have the quality to keep up their play-off push. Their form at the Riverside has been patchy but they host Bristol City who are a side spiralling towards the bottom three. City’s away form has been woeful this season, they are currently on a run of six defeats in seven games on the road, Boro must take this opportunity to keep up with their play-off rivals.

On the whole, Preston’s season will be seen as a failure as they look destined to finish in mid-table instead of in the top six as many predicted. This weekend Graham Westley’s side host Bury who are sliding down the table at an alarming rate. The Shakers are without a win in 12 and have lost six of their last seven on the road. Preston have put together a couple of decent results in recent weeks and should have enough to see off the visitors.

Leyton Orient will be starting to look over their shoulders after losing three of their last four games in League One and they look set for a nervy end to the season. Sheffield Wednesday have not lost in six and under Dave Jones have picked up in form at a crucial point in the season. They should have enough to see off Orient and keep up the pressure on their local rivals, Sheffield United, for second place.

Both Bournemouth and Oldham have been on poor runs of late. The difference being that Bournemouth have been beaten by those at the top of the league, while Oldham have struggled to beat teams in the bottom half and in some cases. Bournemouth’s hopes of a play-off run may have all but disappeared but they have the quality to build on a win in their last game and claim three points.

The wheels have well and truly come off at Cheltenham, the mid-season form team have now lost four games in a row. They risk being overtaken in the table by their opposition on Saturday, Oxford. The visitors have lost just one of their last five and recorded important wins over play-off chasing Rotherham and league leaders Swindon in that time.

Two consecutive defeats have dented Hereford’s good form and that run could become three losses as they host Crewe in their next game. An impressive 2-0 win over leaders Swindon was followed by a 1-0 win at Bradford and with the visitors now on the cusp of the play-offs, expect another three points against a Hereford side who have slipped back into the bottom two.

The final game is one of two sides fighting for their lives at the bottom of the league. Northampton have begun to pull clear of the drop zone after looking in real trouble at the turn of the year. The Cobblers have claimed maximum points in four of the last five games and have won four of their last five at Sixfields. Plymouth may well avoid the drop but they face a home side in resurgent form under Aidy Boothroyd and Northampton look a good bet to claim another victory.
