Melbourne Victory will use their clash against Wellington Phoenix at the Westpac Stadium on Sunday as a launch pad towards arresting their alarming slump in form ahead of the play-offs.

Ange Postecoglou's side have claimed a solitary victory in their previous five matches and Sunday's assignment against bottom-placed Phoenix represents the perfect opportunity to address their shortcomings in recent fixtures.

That aside, the Phoenix, who are already eliminated from the play-offs, will be no pushovers as they jostle with Melbourne Heart to avoid being the league's wooden-spoon side.

A win for Victory will ensure they retain third spot in the league standings, but a defeat could see them slip to fourth position.

While a place in the play-offs has already been secured, a win would ensure third-placed Victory play the team that finishes in sixth spot, a scenario widely welcomed by Postecoglou.

However, Jesse Makarounas will miss the tie with a hamstring injury along, with Gui Finkler [knee], Nick Ansell [groin] and Adama Traore [ankle].

Victory however, will be reinforced by the return of Australia internationals Archie Thompson and Mark Milligan while leading marksman Marco Rojas also re-enters the fray after international duty with New Zealand.

The 21-year-old forward has registered 14 goals in 24 appearances so far this season.

The Phoenix stunned Perth Glory 2-1 at the nib Stadium two Sundays ago and will be determined to finish their season on a high.

A win for the New Zealand based outfit, coupled with a Melbourne Heart defeat to the Central Coast Mariners, will condemn Heart to a bottom-place finish in the league standings.

The Phoenix will welcome back Tyler Boyd and Louis Fenton from international duty, but Glen Moss, Vince Lia and Jimmy Downey are all ruled out through injury.
