Rennes-Paris Saint-Germain Preview: Champions visit bogey venue

Rennes-Paris Saint-Germain Preview: Champions visit bogey venue

Laurent Blanc's side were beaten in the Champions League by Benfica on Tuesday - just their second loss this season - but will be expected to return to winning ways this weekend

Paris Saint-Germain will look to tighten their grip on Ligue 1 at Rennes on Saturday, despite a poor recent record away to the Breton club.

Laurent Blanc's men suffered only their second defeat of the season in all competitions on Tuesday as they were beaten 2-1 by Benfica in an ultimately meaningless Champions League clash.

Blanc rotated much of his squad for that game at Estadio da Luz, with superstar duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva among those left out completely.

Those players should all return for the trip to the Stade de la Route de Lorient, a venue where PSG have won just once in their last 11 visits.

The defending champions have no new injury worries for their trip to Brittany and the capital club will also be boosted by the return of midfielder Marco Verratti and defender Gregory van der Wiel, who were both suspended for the defeat to Benfica.

PSG may have a dismal record on their travels at Rennes, but they should be confident of cementing their grip on top spot against a side on a dreadful run of form.

Rennes made a strong start to life under former Real Sociedad coach Philippe Montainer, losing just one of their first seven league games.

However, they have struggled to maintain that momentum and sit 13th in Ligue 1 having earned only one win since October.

Last season's Coupe de la Ligue finalists were beaten 2-0 by PSG in the corresponding fixture in 2012-13, with Jeremy Menez and Ibrahimovic the difference between the sides.

The hosts are without one of their key first-team players as they look to avenge that defeat, with defender Sylvain Armand - who left PSG to join Rennes in the close-season - suspended after being sent off in the 2-0 loss to local rivals Lorient last weekend.

Wingers Romain Alessandrini and Foued Kadir are both set to return for Rennes and defenders John Boye and Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik, who missed the trip to Lorient - should also be fit to play.
