Dug in despite being up against a real talent in Konoplyanka. Put in some superbly timed challenges and constantly snuffed out Ukraine counterattacks with his positioning and reading of the game.
Elegnantly marshaled the defence throughout the match as was always looking to burst out of defence and create play from the back. Read the game magnificently and snuffed out the threat from Zozulya with minimal fuss.
Was involved in a running duel with Yarmolenko all evening and gave as good as he got in terms of running and strength.
Was box-to-box all evening and showed a terrific engine in the middle of the park. Got back into defensive positions well after going forward but showed plenty of ambitions and made some terrific late bursting runs into the box.

Looked up for the match from the start and was always a thorn in the side of Ukraine from his position down that right-hand side. Delivery from set-pieces was sensational all evening.
