The Young Socceroos have an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages of the Under-20 World Cup after a disastrous 2-1 loss to underdogs El Salvador

The Young Socceroos' chances of reaching the Fifa U-20 World Cup knockout stages have been dealt a blow after a surprise 2-1 loss to El Salvador in Rize on Tuesday

Paul Okon's men, who were impressive in a 1-1 draw against Colombia in their tournament opener, are bottom of Group C after the loss.

Josh Brillante gave Australia a dream start with a thunderous strike on nine minutes but El Salvador were ahead before half-time thanks to goals from Diego Coca and Jose Angel Pena.

Australia must beat hosts Turkey in Trabzon on Friday and hope Colombia at least draw against El Salvador.

The Young Socceroos made the perfect start at Yeni Sehir Stadium thanks to Brillante, who was one of the stars against Colombia.

The Newcastle Jets midfielder controlled a pass 30 yards from goal before firing an unstoppable strike into the corner.

El Salvador, who were beaten 3-0 by Turkey in their opener, responded just eight minutes later through Coca.

Coca got on the end of a squared headed pass at the back post, nodding in to make it 1-1.

El Salvador took a shock lead five minutes before half-time after a fine team move led to Pena putting his side ahead.

Mauricio Alfaro's men defended resiliently throughout the second half, holding on for a crucial three points.
