Player Ratings: Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Valencia (Agg 3-2)

Goal.com was on hand to cast a critical eye over proceedings at Parc des Princes, where the home side progressed in unconvincing fashion

By Robin Bairner

    Salvatore Sirigu

Was not always at his commanding best, but the Italian goalkeeper proved to be a solid last line of defence for PSG, that was breached only by one fearsome strike. Did not always command his box in the greatest manner, but he produced a couple of excellent catches to take the pressure off his defence late on.

  • Thiago Silva

    Thiago Silva

Back in the side after injury, and immediately back to his imperious best. When crosses were delivered into the box, the Brazil international was inevitably on hand to get a foot or head to the ball to clear. A superb central-defensive display.

    Alex

This was not a completely flawless match from the Brazilian, but he won countless headers in the box when Valencia delivered from wide. Read the game impressively and was a real rock.

  • Maxwell

    Maxwell

Struggled to deal with the pace of Feghouli on the right wing initially, but used his experience wisely throughout this match. Used the ball intelligently on the rare occasions he pressed on and nearly released Lavezzi in the opening couple of minutes.

  • Christophe Jallet

    Christophe Jallet

Caught out early on when Lucas got the better of him, but the right-back recovered well to clear the danger. Was replaced early by Van der Wiel due to injury.

  • Blaise Matuidi

Blaise Matuidi Top of the Match

PSG’s metronome in the centre of the field, the former Saint-Etienne man maintained his reputation for rarely having a poor game. Was immensely industrious in front of the back four and won a great deal of possession. His energy was key to PSG's success on the night.

  • Clément Chantôme

    Clément Chantôme

In the midfield for his energy, he failed to produce a great deal of quality. His first half was summed up by two incidents. The first was when he passed the ball into touch when no one was injured, and the second was a corner kick that never even entered the field of play. Improved after the break.

  • Javier Pastore

    3.50

    Javier Pastore

An often-criticised player in France, he worked hard down the left, but his offensive quality was often lacking. Certainly did not shirk his defensive responsibilities though, and worked hard for the team throughout.

  • Thiago Motta

    3.00

    Thiago Motta

Another man reintroduced into the PSG squad after injury, and he was preferred to David Beckham. Was reasonably effective in the first half, but lacked match fitness and was withdrawn with less than an hour played.

  • Lucas
    3
    3
    2.00

    Lucas

Excited the Parc des Princes crowd with his individual skill and willingness to run at defenders early on, but did not get involved in the game enough and was rather peripheral overall.

  • Ezequiel Lavezzi
    6
    0
    3.00

    Ezequiel Lavezzi

Operated as a lone forward in this clash, but looked at his most dangerous when running in behind the Valencia defence. As a result, PSG sometimes lacked a player to link their play in this position, as Ibrahimovic would have been expected to do.

    Gregory van der Wiel

Came on early for the injured Jallet but had another difficult night. Ineffective going forward and shaky defensively, it was his loose pass that led to Valencia’s opener.

  • Kevin Gameiro

    3.50

    Kevin Gameiro

Injected some much-needed energy to the forefront of the PSG side, and it was his enthusiasm that ultimately prompted the equalising goal.

  • Guaita

    3.00

    Guaita

Was not bothered by many shots on his goal, but he was quick from his line to sweep behind the defence and punched away severalcrosses. Unlucky to concede to Lavezzi after saving the initial effort.

  • Aly Cissokho
    3

    3.00

    Aly Cissokho

One of five players in the Valencia side with Ligue 1 experience, the former Lyon player had a fairly quiet match down the right. The threat of Lucas ensured he could not push on too much, and when he got into good areas his crossing was weak.

  • Barragán
    1
    1
    2.50

    Barragán

Managed to get forward to send some dangerous crosses into the box, though his consistency in this department was rather mixed. When forced to defend one-on-one against Pastore, he was dogged but rarely totally convincing.

  • Víctor Ruiz
    2
    0
    3.00

    Víctor Ruiz

Rode his luck against Lavezzi at times, as his judgement was not always good and he struggled to match the former Napoli man for pace. A clumsy challenge on Matuidi shortly before half-time saw the defender booked.

  • Jérémy Mathieu
    2
    0
    3.50

    Jérémy Mathieu

Utilised in a rather unfamiliar centre-back role, he did not look especially uncomfortable in his new position. Matched the PSG forwards well for pace and covered Ruiz effectively.

  • Albelda
    1
    1
    3.00

    Albelda

Booked in the first half for an ill-advised challenge on Matuidi in the centre of the field, but gave a solid account of himself throughout this encounter. Used his experience well.

  • Sofiane Feghouli
    0
    2
    2.50

    Sofiane Feghouli

Threatened Maxwell within the first minutes of the match with his pace, but was unable to make a great impression on this clash otherwise. Gave away possession too cheaply and his delivery in the crucial areas of the pitch was often short of quality.

  • Parejo
    0
    2
    2.50

    Parejo

Played a steady match in the centre of the field, which was where he camped himself for much of this encounter as an anchoring force for the visitors. Was unable to have a truly telling impact at either end of the field, though.

  • Tino Costa
    1
    1
    3.00

    Tino Costa

Showed a willingness to get the ball onto his left foot and get shots away when in range, but the Chilean’s accuracy was not what it might have been, and he was often over ambitious. His crossing was outstanding, particularly those from corners.

  • Jonas
    2

    3.00

    Jonas

Brought the tie to life with a stunning shot from outside the box into the top corner of the net. Was a real menace down the left flank, from where he showed plenty of pace and a great appetite to support Soldado in attack.

  • Roberto Soldado

Roberto Soldado Flop of the Match

Valencia's focal point was given only a limited chance to shine in the early stages. Came more to the fore after the break, when he started to link play more effectively.

Substitutions
