Coritiba 1-1 Palmeiras (Agg 1-3): Scolari's side crowned Copa do Brasil champions

The Sao Paulo giants booked their spot in next year's edition of the Copa Libertadores despite failing to truly impress across both legs of the final

Palmeiras won their first major title since 1999 as a 1-1 draw with Coritiba at a sodden Couto Pereira stadium was enough to secure the trophy.

Holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg the Verdao found themselves under heavy pressure from the off but managed to stifle the hosts' attack until Ayrton fired in a masterful free kick just after the hour mark. Hopes of a comeback did not last long though as Betinho restored parity on the night and Coxa were thus consigned to defeat in the final for the second consecutive year.

The teams were welcomed by a raucous crowd in Curitiba who sought to intimidate the opposition with an apocalyptic 'green hell' of fireworks and flairs. The home side attempted to pick up from there as they controlled possession in the early exchanges and put the Paulista side on the back foot.

However, similarly to the first leg, Coxa struggled to create goal scoring opportunities and it was Palmeiras who threatened first. Mazinho rolled the ball to Juninho and his effort from 18 yards was tipped over the top by Vanderlei in the 12th minute.

Seven minutes later the Alviverde had another great chance to score when Betinho beat the offside trap from Marcos Assuncao's free kick but his connection with the ball was poor and he failed to divert the ball on target.

Coritiba refused to allow the game to run the same course and on the half-hour mark they finallly showed their dangerous side. Everton Costa showed great tenacity to win the ball back in the area before laying it off to Rafinha. He hit the ball with the outside of his left boot, bending it away from goal and it shaved the far post.

Palmeiras would have been pleased by their first half performance but the hosts showed no signs of letting up on their positive mentality in the second half. Yet Bruno remained relatively untested as Everton Costa and Ayrton both saw their attempts fly off target.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's side failed to hold out as they did in the first leg and Coxa set up a tense final 30 minutes when they eventually found the net. Artur fouled Lincoln 25 yards from goal and Ayrton took the free kick from a left-of-centre position. He lifted it over the wall and bent it past the keeper and into the top corner.

Yet Coritiba's hopes of drawing level in the tie were dashed just moments later. Assuncao's free kick received the slightest of touches from Betinho and his glanced header drifted in at the far post in what effectively ended the contest.

The hosts lost much of their attacking impetus following the goal and they did not trouble Bruno again until the 78th minute. The sprightly Everton Ribeiro plumped for an ambitious from distance that had the keeper backpedalling but he managed to get a hand to the ball and tip it over the bar.

Rafinha dragged a fantastic opportunity to find the net wide in the closing stages which epitomised the profligacy in front of goal across the two legs which ultimately cost them the trophy and Pereira was dismissed for receiving his second yellow card in second-half stoppage time.

Palmeiras will now compete in the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 2009 next season but will need to ensure that they avoid becoming complacent in the league. For Coxa, attentions will turn back to the league before their Copa Sudamericana campaign can begin in the coming months.
