Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri impressed in picking up the opening and clinching goals, respectively, despite the Saints threatening to pull off a shock by taking the lead
Virtually a spectator for most of the game but the England goalkeeper twice had to pick the ball out of the back of his net. Could do nothing about either strike.

Vincent Kompany
The City captain looked a little bit rusty when Southampton counterattacked, perhaps a result of his lack of pre-season training due to a calf injury.

Pablo Zabaleta
A typically dogged display from the Argentine right-back, who constantly bombed forward and latched on to some passes in behind the Southampton defence.

Joleon Lescott
Generally solid but lucky not to concede a penalty in the first half for a needless challenge on Rodriguez when he cleaned out the Southampton man.

Gael Clichy
Used his pace to prevent Puncheon running into space and took up good defensive positions. Missed a great chance on the volley in the 52nd minute but his cross was excellent in the build-up to Nasri's winner.

Samir Nasri
An influential display in midfield was capped by his winner, struck into the top corner 10 minutes from time. Always drifted into space and seemed to have a good understanding with Tevez, playing a gorgeous pass for the Argentine's opener.

Jack Rodwell
An unremarkable debut for the 21-year-old until he gave the ball straight to Southampton before the Saints scored their second. Strong early challenge on Lallana and kept his passing simple and tidy, even if it lacked a little creativity.

David Silva
A frustrating afternoon for the Spaniard. Often involved in the play but showed why he rarely takes penalties with an awful spot-kick straight at the goalkeeper. Hit the crossbar from eight yards in the second half on the turn.

Yaya Touré
Controlled the game in central midfield, demanded the ball, driving forward and picking out brilliant passes in the final third for Zabaleta, Clichy and Tevez.

Sergio Agüero
City's top scorer of last season left the field on a stretcher in the 13th minute after suffering a knee injury in a challenge with Clyne. Hopefully the damage will not prove to be as serious as first feared.

Carlos Tévez
The new lean, mean Carlos Tevez made his mark with the opener five minutes before the break, racing through and providing a calm finish. By far City's greatest threat throughout the game, winning the penalty and constantly looking to wriggle into positions and shoot at goal.

The Bosnian came on early on to replace the injury Aguero. Seemed slightly off the pace of the game but produced a striker's finish in the second half to level.

Mario Balotelli
Came on for Silva in the 72nd minute but had little impact. Shot wide from a tight angle when he should have scored after being picked out by Nasri.
The Southampton goalkeeper will feel disappointed that he was beaten at his near post by Tevez for the opener but on the other hand saved Silva's penalty and made some solid stops.

Jose Rocha Fonte
Caught ball-watching on a few occasions but stayed compact in the heart of the defence and made some important blocks and challenges. Allowed Tevez to run off him for the first goal.

The left-back produced a solid performance until his awful defensive header straight to Nasri for City to score their third goal.

Struggled to cope with Tevez's movement and skill as he conceded the penalty for a foul on the City striker. Seemed to enjoy the physical battle with Dzeko.

Nathaniel Clyne
Decent enough display from the right-back on his debut. Showed good athleticism and commitment, even though he had few opportunities to show his attacking qualities. Blameless for Aguero's injury.

Morgan Schneiderlin
Worked tirelessly in midfield, mainly off the ball as he put City midfielders under pressure. Tough job keeping tabs on the likes of Nasri and Tevez but protected the defence well.

Barely had a sight on goal but provided a a useful outlet on the rare occasions Southampton had possession. Strong and powerful to relieve pressure and try to start counterattacks.

Provided natural width but panicked in possession and, barring one occasion in the second half, caused few problems in the City defence.

A memorable day for the 17-year-old midfielder and he didn't let himself down, looking perfectly comfortable against the Premier League champions. Replaced by Steven Davis in the 65th minute.

Unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when he was taken out by Lescott early on and worked hard in a wide position. Replaced by Lambert in the 55th minute.

Can he do it in the Premier League? On this evidence, yes. Lovely finish in the 59th minute after replacing Rodriguez.
