ACL preview: Brisbane Roar v Beijing Guoan

In what is a dead rubber in Group F, the Roar can finish their season on a high note, while Beijing can give momentum to their promising CSL campaign

AFC Champions League - ACL - Brisbane Roar - Beijing Guoan - Massimo Murdocca

After securing a second consecutive A-League championship, Brisbane Roar has been unable to replicate that form in Asia.

The Roar will host Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan on Wednesday in what is effectively a dead rubber in Group F of the AFC Champions League.

Newly appointed Roar coach Rado Vidosic will be searching for his first win at the helm and will be hoping to give the fans a good send off heading into the off-season.

Both teams are on two points at the foot of the group and are yet to register a win in the competition.

In Beijing on March 20 on matchday two, the Roar earned a 1-1 draw through Mitch Nichols' first-half strike.

But the A-League champions have struggled to cope defensively during the group stage, conceding 10 goals in their previous five games.

Although the Roar had to contend with the emerging FC Toyko and K-League powerhouse Ulsan Hyundai, their performances in Asia have been a far cry from their domestic prowess.

Similarly, Beijing's Portuguese manager Jamie Pacheco will be thoroughly disappointed with his side's efforts throughout the campaign.

With only two draws, the CSL outfit have fallen well short of their expectations of a top-two finish.

The Roar's hopes of reaching the Round of 16 were extinguished on matchday five with a fatal 4-2 loss at the hands of group leaders Tokyo.

Beijing's chances of progressing to the knockout phase ended at home to Ulsan with a 3-2 defeat.

The hosts' league form has been better, however, with Beijing lying fourth on the CSL table after 10 matches.

This game will provide the Vidosic with another opportunity to cast an eye over his squad as head coach.

The Roar will be without pivotal Brazilian playmaker Henrique and vice-captain Shane Stefanutto, who join captain Matt Smith on the injury list.

Youngster Jack Hingert is still on the mend after suffering an ankle injury during the A-League second leg semi-final in April and will not take part.

Beijing has a relatively clean bill of health besides long-term injuries to goalkeeper Yang Zhi, Senegalese defender Francois and forward Tan Tiancheng.
