Rafa Benitez's men head into the second leg with two away goals and a lead after Fabian Schar's late penalty was followed by David Luiz's injury-time free kick

    Yann Sommer

Made a fine early save to deny Lampard but moments later there wasn't much he could do to keep out Moses. He then made a superb save to keep our Ramires before half-time. Should have done better with Luiz's free-kick.

Joo-Ho Park Flop of the Match

Had a solid game defensively but after a bright start his attacking influence faded during the match. He had a couple of combinations with Stocker which almost carved Chelsea open.

  • Philipp Degen

    Philipp Degen

Had no answer to the power and pace of Victor Moses and struggled to control the Nigerian all night.

    Fabian Schär

Had a mixed game in the Basel defence, at times he made great challenges but his positioning and passing out of defence handed Chelsea openings. He converted the late penalty with conviction though.

    G. Serey Die

Ran into attacking positions often but gave the ball away in possession far too many times. He showed bite in his tackling which did help disrupt some Chelsea attacks.

  • Valentin Stocker

    Valentin Stocker

He was a constant threat down the left-hand side, working hard and keeping busy without threatening to create. But early in the second period he wandered in from the left and hit the post with Cech beaten. His persistence won the visitors the late penalty, although he will wonder how.

  • Fabian Frei

    2.50

    Fabian Frei

Was bright and full of energy throughout the match but was largely ineffective in his efforts. Had a well-struck shot fly a yard past the post with Cech rooted to the spot.

  • Mohamed Salah

    Mohamed Salah

Had very quiet first half but came alive to make some incisive passes in the final third after the break. A poor first touch let him down twice when he was presented with a chance to shoot.

    Mohamed El Nenny

Had Petr Cech back-pedalling with a miscued cross early on but his delivery was a let down overall. His passing in midfield was reliable if not spectacular. Came off just after the hour.

Came off the bench on the hour mark and took time settling into the match but then struck a curling effort which only just sailed over the bar.

    Jacques Zoua

Replace El Nenny midway through the second half to provide extra attacking threat for the hosts. His pace did help Basel get in behind but his delivery should have been better.

    Petr Cech

Came off his line twice to snuff out good Basel chances, apart from that he made a couple of decent saves and saw Stocker hit his post.

    Branislav Ivanovic

After the drama at Anfield the Chelsea defender produced a good display. He was involved in Moses' goal and came close to getting one for himself late on. Defensively he was solid alongside Terry.

  • Ashley Cole

    Ashley Cole

A disciplined performance from the veteran left-back, he let Victor Moses do most of the running on Chelsea's left and was rarely troubled by Frei .

  • David Luiz

David Luiz Top of the Match

He might have been guilty of overplaying in the final third but he bossed the midfield battle in the first half. His passing was less assured in the second and was fortunate not to be punished further for a poor tackle on Degen. He won the game with a clever free-kick in injury time which caught Sommer napping.

  • John Terry
    29
    9

    John Terry

Organised the Chelsea defence well to weather the storm as Basel launched attacks in the second half despite the penalty. Was somehow denied a winner with a blocked close-range header in injury time.

  • César Azpilicueta

    Victor Moses

Got himself into a danger area inside the box and managed to turn in the opening goal. Showed pace and power on the left flank flying past Degen at will. He even put in a impressive defensive shift.

  • Eden Hazard

    Eden Hazard

Made a bright start weaving in and out of Basel defenders and came close to scoring late in the first period when he dragged a one-on-one wide before volleying over from inside the area. He continued to cause havoc in the final third in the second half before coming off.

  • Fernando Torres

    12
    2.50

    Fernando Torres

Had a clumsy first half where he was barely in the game but was involved in a late chance when his overhead kick fell into the path of Hazard. Hit the post from Hazard's cut back when he should have found the target after the break, and his touch was often wayward.
