Diego Maradona - Fujairah

Maradona goes crazy as Fujairah grab last gasp winner

After signing for UAE Division One side Fujairah to coach them for the 2017/18 season last summer, Diego Maradona has not had the chance to be exposed to the UAE audiences for the first half of the season.

This changed when Fujairah were drawn to play against top division side Hatta in the Round of 16 of the UAE President’s Cup, meaning that Maradona’s side would be on primary TV channels Abu Dhabi Sports and Dubai Sports instead of being rooted to secondary channel Sharjah Sports.

Coverage and interest in a game between two minnows has never been bigger, with the match seeing Fujairah and Hatta play 120 minutes of football as the game approached penalties due to a 2-2 scoreline.

However, it all came down to a freekick which was parried by the opposition goalkeeper before a Haytham Ali winner in the dying minute of the game helped Fujairah beat the odds and qualify.

The goal sent Maradona into a frenzy, celebrating like a madman as his side moved into the quarter finals of the competition. He ran around the field and celebrated in front of the travelling Fujairah fans and continued his happiness in the dressing room, engaging in many celebrations with fellow players and coaches.

Fujairah have the possibility of being drawn to a big side in the next round of the competition, which indicates greater coverage for the team dubbed as the Wolves.
