Andy Carroll could leave Newcastle following his problems off the pitch – and Tottenham are in pole position to land him, Goal.com UK can reveal.

The striker is also attracting interest from Manchester United and Liverpool after a stunning start to the Premier League season.

Carroll has been the subject of controversy in his personal life and figures close to the player now consider he may have to move away from Newcastle to settle down.

The Gateshead-born star is currently living with Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan as a condition of bail after he was charged with assaulting a former girlfriend.

It is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the 21-year-old, who is expected to be rewarded for his fine form with a call up to Fabio Capello's England squad to face France on Wednesday.

Carroll signed a new five-year contract at St James' Park last month but there are concerns in the north-east that he may not fulfil his potential and follow the same self-destructive path as team-mate Joey Barton.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes he will be able to tame Carroll by taking him away from his group of friends in Newcastle and offering him a fresh start in London.

Spurs made a late enquiry for Carroll at the end of the summer transfer window when it emerged that Newcastle were interested in Tottenham striker Robbie Keane and have been monitoring the powerful forward ever since.

Redknapp has to sell players before he can buy in January but is now weighing up a £10 million bid – and he could try to use Ireland captain Keane as a makeweight in the deal.

Newcastle are reluctant to sell their only genuine goalscorer and the man they regard as the future of the club and heir to Alan Shearer.

But owner Mike Ashley could be tempted to cash in on his prize asset to raise funds for the cash-strapped club and Carroll is believed to be open to a move if he feels it will benefit his career.

Liverpool are also in the market for a striker and would consider a move for the 6ft 4in forward, who has scored seven Premier League goals already this season and has terrorised defenders with his heading ability.

Sir Alex Ferguson could also challenge for his signature as he looks to bolster a strikeforce that has been continually hampered by injuries to Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney.

But Spurs will lead the bidding as the Londoners are desperate to sign a striker who can play on his own up front and Carroll fits the bill.

None of Redknapp's current strikers - Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane - are suited to the role as a lone frontman and have scored just three Premier League goals between them this season.

Tottenham have been linked with a host of forwards from across Europe including Luis Fabiano, Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema and Diego Forlan.

But the club will look to sell the likes of Robbie Keane, David Bentley and Giovani dos Santos in January before chairman Daniel Levy sanctions a big-money offer for a striker.
